Homemade Taco Seasoning

I "cook" with taco seasoning packs a lot. We like spicy, Mexican food here at the Soutter house. I also make a good cold taco dip for the neighborhood kids, for potlucks, and for parties that uses one packet of taco seasoning. So I always have taco seasoning packs in my stockpile.

But I was beginning to get grossed out by what was in these packs:

monosodium glutamate

corn starch

silicon dioxide
So even though I could usually get the Ol El Paso, McCormick, and Taco Bell packets for free, I would skip and spend a full 89¢ on the brand that did not have any of these long unpronounceable words in it. I'd get the brand that only had spices in it.

THEN I decided to try to make my own taco seasoning and it worked! It worked wonderfully and was cheaper than the 49 - 89¢ packs at the grocery store. So I thought I'd share the recipe for

Homemade Taco Seasoning Packet

The below equals one pack. Stir the following together and use as you would any recipe that calls for a packet of taco seasoning. One packet or the below is good for 1 pound of ground beef.

1 TBSP chili powder

1/4 tsp of each: garlic powder, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes, and oregano

1 and 1/2 tsp of cumin

1 tsp salt

1 tsp pepper

Now if you are using this on ground beef or ground turkey to make taco meat, you would add 3/4 cup of water. Again the above and 3/4 cup of water is good for ONE pound of ground beef.

Tell me. . do you have any yummy recipes that use taco seasoning packets? I'd love to try a new recipe.

And one of my mini goals this summer is to come up with a mixture of spices for those Ranch Dip mix packets. I use those often too. Anyone have a Homemade Ranch Dip Packet recipe??

P.S. Thanks for shooting me emails and leaving comments about hard-boiled eggs and deviled eggs. I can't wait to try some of your suggestions!! For those of you who missed that post about eggs, click here and be sure to scroll down and read the comments!!

  4. Brooke-

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment. . you made me smile. We too like it better than the packets cause we can make it spicier :) So what I want to figure out is. .make a huge batch of this taco seasoning and put it in a tupperware and then when I make tacos. . how much do I use. . would a tablespoon per lb work. . I need to figure that out next time I make this. . let me know if you have any thoughts on that.

  5. Awesome! THanks!
