Help for Encouraging Family Talk over Dinner

My Meal Planning & Freezer Cooking class is divided into 5 sections. My favorite section is titled: It's So Much More Than Filling Stomachs. And in this section we talk about how dinner time is not just a time to nourish the body, but a time to nourish the soul too. I share ideas of how to get your family connecting around the dinner table and how to get the kids to eat rather than complain.

So when I saw this, I had to share. Here on the blog How Does She? they have given us 5 pdf files of family dinner questions. There are enough questions that surely some are to apply whether you have young kids at home, older kids, or no kids.

Some questions are open ended, some are true/false, and some are silly trivia. They are sure to encourage you and your family to linger around the dinner table a little bit longer. I love this Norman Rockwell painting. See how everyone is focused on each other rather than the food:

Here's a sampling of some of the questions How Does She? provides:

A dime has how many ridges around the edge? (118)

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you (adults have to answer too)?

Who do you think you are most like in our family? Why?

How many pounds of poop does an elephant poop in a day? (that is sure to get your little boys laughing, probably your big boy too. The answer is 80).

Perhaps you can ask these 4 questions tonight!

And click here to see all the questions!!!

How Does She? suggests cutting the questions out in little strips and putting them in a jar and pulling them out over dinner. That would encourage your kids' reading skills too; they would not even know they were practicing.

If you print out the questions or even just share the 4 above tonight, and you have a moment, leave the gals at How Does She? a thank you in their comments section. It is always nice to know your work is appreciated.

And if you are interested in my next Meal Planning & Freezer Cooking class, the class is Monday, Oct 11 at my house from 7-9:15pm. This is the last one for 2010. My next one will not be until Feb 2011. Here are the details and registration if interested.
