My Girls' New Bedroom

We recently redid our girls' room. Those of you who came to my House to Home class last year remember this:

Our girls' shared a bed and our oldest was nearing 14. . .so we created loft beds with individual spaces underneath for each of our girls.

Brooke's side is hot pink and a deep purple:

Anna's side is turquoise and lime green:

All tied together with a whimsical swirl:

My favorite part of my girls' new room is all the words of encouragement.

All the intentional art.

Anna and Brooke made these during one of our family canvas nights:

And did you see all the words of love and affirmation written on the lofts:

I so wanted to keep these love notes contained just to the ladder. . but they quickly spread all over:
And then I let go, and thought. . .might as well fill their room with as much encouragement, with as much truth, and with as many words that contradict what the world often screams. I was practically handing out Sharpies at the door.

Oh yes, this is one way I have to found to combat the negative messages that my girls sometime receive. Like being told you have big ears or being called gorilla. . .true stories. Kids can be so mean. And supposedly it takes 4 positive comments to erase one negative comment.

My girls come home to way more than 4 positive comments. They come home to this:

And this:

And this:

And my girls wake up to this on their mirror:

It is what I call intentional decorating. . that's my word, eh? It oozes into every area of your life.

I am sharing this post over at Remodelaholic's Link Up Party. . so many great ideas for kids' bedrooms over there.

  1. Su the girls room is so awesome and God is so Great!! He intentionally puts people like you into our lives. You and your family are such an inspiration.

I collect the "LOVE" plaques. I have ones with angels on each letter, one with bears hanging on to the letters, a LOVE plate. God is Love and Love is God.

Thanks for sharing this story with us... your girls are beautiful. I really need to find the time to stop by and see you again... I have some baby formula to drop off too. Email me and let me know when would be a good time for you!!

  2. I love the new room and the encouraging words! I have two young girls so I am filing all of this in my head for future use!! :)

I have a picture frame in my house that says "the most important things in life aren't things." It has a collage of pictures of my family. It's a good reminder when I am feeling busy working on "stuff" and my family really needs my attention more!

    p.s. Your girls are *beautiful*!!

  3. Thanks for the give-away, Su!

I have quite a few pieces of art around my house that encourage me. My favorite is a painting that my friend (and former roommate until she met her husband) painted for me. It is a picture of a person kneeling on a rock in the middle of a body of water, with waves crashing against the rock. You can see a storm in the background that is moving away. She painted this right after having miscarried her first pregnancy...of twins. And she painted it right as I was in the throes of a hard season of unemployment and a breakup. I love walking in my home and seeing that reminder of God's faithfulness to help us stand!

  4. I just bought a piece this weekend that says "Giggles and smuggles and pudgy little toes make it all worthwhile.". It reminds me to hang on during the hard days with my little twins.

  5. Su,
I don't think you know this, but you are a blessing to me!! I attended your couponing class earlier in the year. It's been awesome to change our spending with your lessons. But I also appreciate your intentional messages. They have helped me so much as a mom!!

PS - I paint children's canvases for fun and for gifts (and for money to anyone who is willing to pay me!!). So it's fun to see your creative ideas as well. :)

  6. Canvas art is on my current 'wish list' for our house. I just bought this http://store.dayspring.com/bestandcogaw.html for my sister-in-laws new nursery. I think I would buy one of the floral canvases with scripture for our house. I don't know how I'd choose. There are so many great pieces!!

  7. We are putting up some wall art in our baby girl's room that states "All Good Gifts Come From Above". It's going to hang right over her crib and will remind us every time that we walk in her room that she is a gift from God.

  8. Su, I have several "inspirational" pieces of art in my home - but my favorite is the one you did for me "In this House . . ."
I love it so much, it makes me tear up every time I read it. The Lord has blessed me so much with a wonderful family!
If I won the Dayspring gift card I would buy something for our new Pastor's wife who is starting in July. I am getting together a "goodie bag" to welcome her to our church and to NC!

  9. Hi Su-

First off--how adorable is Brooks new hairdo? I LOVE it!!

My favorite piece of art work in my home--I have 2. One is a watercolor a friend did of where I got married--"Pretty Place"--a mountain-top, open air chapel.
The second is a cross stitch I did YEARS ago, "Home Sweet Home".

  10. HI Su.
The girls room looks amazing ... but I'm not surpised given the talents of their parents.

I *heart* Dayspring. I get encouraging emails from them. I bought a piece from them that hangs over a door way ... I was hoping it would hang on the doorway to Gerry's closet where I now have my coffee maker (long story) but it still looks great where I have it now (it didn't fit where I intended it to go). It has 3 coffee cups steaming with the "Be Still and know that I am God" verse on it. I have lots of coffee moments during the day and it helps remind to be be still. It's hard to be still as a Momma. Here is the actual link to the canvas print I got ... love it.

    Thanks for all you do!

  11. I love the girls new room - the colors are fantastic! I especially like how the area under the bed provides each girl with her own "space" within the same room. I like the sharpie blessings too - it has inspired an idea for a piece of art in my boys room. I'm adding it to the virtual list. -JM
