Most of us dream of a home that is filled with peace and joy, a home that runs efficiently, a home that is truly a refuge from the chaos of the world. But the day-to-day reality is often times far from this. We juggle. We fit this in and make room for that. We multitask. We hang in there. We survive. But oh, there is more for us than a life of survival.
In this teaching, I explore the top 10 obstacles to running an intentional home. And then I share 10 ways to make active, intentional decisions to combat these hinderances. This teaching is filled with many personal stories and well as many application points. This teaching can also be customized for Christian women by including a look at Scripture.
Motherhood is not easy. There are sleepless nights, temper tantrums, homework hassles, unlimited carpooling, and teenage hormones. But God has more than a life of survival for us moms. In this message, I share how God has an amazing plan for us moms. I then explore three practical means for experiencing that plan on a daily basis.
Kids and Chores
I used to say it was easier to do the household chores myself than listen to the kids' whining. I used to say it was easier and quicker to do the task myself than take the time to teach the kids how to do the chore right. Now I know the main key to keeping the home clean is a consistent chore time for my kids. In this presentation, I share with honesty, humor, and wisdom:
age appropriate chores and how to teach a child a new chore
how to get kids to do their chores with no whining or complaining
how to get get kids to take their time and not rush through their work
how to get kids to do chores without us nagging and yelling
how chores do so much more than just help keep the house clean
This teaching can also be customized for Christian women by including a section on how I uses Scripture to teach my children chores.
For the past four years, I have been teaching ladies (and a few guys too!) how to cut their grocery bill in half by strategically using coupons.I grocery shop for our family of 7 for less than $100 a week (and I still buy diapers!). That is all our food, cleaning, and health and beauty products. And I shop one grocery store and one drug store only. For more details about this teaching, click here.
Meal Planning & Freezer Cooking
In this teaching, you will not only learn how to maximize your savings, but you will learn how to transform that hectic, rushed, stressful dinnertime into a time to come together and connect. Dinner really can be a peaceful gathering, a time to bless and enjoy your family and friends. My goal is for you to go from overwhelmed and frustrated to empowered and confident when you hear the questiion, "What's for dinner?" For more details about this teaching, click here.
Intentional Home Organization & Decor
Decorating and organizing your home is not a frivolous pastime, nor does it mean you are focused on umimportant things. Making the most of your home and creating a home that reflects the real you is a way to nourish yourself, your family, and those you welcome in. In this class, I focus on the decluttering, organizing, cleaning, and decorating of our homes. You'll begin to nail down the unique purpose and vision of your home and then figure out how to organize and decorate to serve that purpose.
And here are my most requested topics in the area of parenting:
My husband and I are far from perfect parents, but we both share a passion for bringing up and equipping the next generation. We believe in raising kids who are a joy to be around and who will grow to make a difference in the world.
It does not matter whether you have a toddler at home or a teen or a kid somewhere in between, I am confident you will leave this presentation with things to ponder, things to discuss with your spouse, and big dreams for your kids.
My husband and I can present this message together if your event is aimed at both fathers and mothers. Here is a picture of my husband and me. We have been married for 20 years.
God does not put an age limit on when we can start hearing Him or when we can be used by Him. At the same time, most of us spend little time teachng our kids to quiet themselves and listen to His voice. In this message, we will discuss the different ways God speaks and I will share personal stories, Scriptures, and practical tools for teaching your kids (and maybe us too) how to tune our ears to God's voice.
Most of us shy away from talking to our kids about sex. It is just plain uncomfortable for us and our kids. We know we must, but we often times aren’t able to even get started. In this teaching, I share practical methods for opening the lines of communication. Starting with toddlers and moving up through teenagers, I give you the basics on how to structure conversation about sex. I will share humorous and realistic stories from my experience with my own 5 children. I will also guide you to several books and resources that will help you approach this topic with confidence.
We have 5 kids, 3 biological and 2 adopted. We adopted Jonathan at 10 months old from Guatemala. We adopted Daniel at 7 years old from Ethiopia. I can bring myself or my husband or even my kids to your adoption event. We can tailor message to the goals of your gathering. I can share on the beauty, the thrill, the difficulty, and the practicality of adoption. Most of all, I can share how God is for adoption and will provide. There is no need to be scared to follow his call.
In this message, I share personal stories and the strategies my husband and I have used to raise kids who dream big and never say, "I can't". I will explore how to teach your kids to dream, how to allow your kids to risk, and how to support your kids to soar.
Christmas is supposed to be a time where we reflect on the babe in the manger, and get in touch with the amazing love of a God who would come for us. However, more often than not, it is a time of busyness and exhaustion. Every year, we intend for our Christmas to be different but somehow Jesus gets lost in the presents, parties, and decorations. In this teaching I inspire you to slow down and reclaim the meaning of Christmas. I leave you with practical tools for transforming the holiday season and give you multiple activities and resources for bringing the Christmas story alive for you and your children.
Along the same lines, I also give a message on How to Make Easter More Meaningful for Your Kids
Following God with Reckelss Abandon
Are we going to make excuses as to why we can't be used by God or are we going to make ourselves available for God-sized dreams? So often we get our eyes fixed on ourselves, our shortcomings, and the large problems in front of us. Instead our eyes need to be fixed on God. In this teaching, Su explores the book of Nehemiah and answers the questions:
In this message, I encourage women that it really is time for us to be the radical, crazy, on fire for Jesus women we were created to be. To love Jesus so much, to be so submitted to Him that we say, "Lord, if you say so, I’ll do it." Even when it doesn’t make sense and even if we do not think it’s going to work. I explore Luke 5 and share what happens when we lay aside our dreams, ideas, and plans and do what God says.
On one hand I am your normal stay-at-home mom who takes care of her husband, 5 kids, and home. I have my good days and bad days. Some days, I feel like all I do is cart kids to and from school and do laundry. Some days I am in tears because I am so overwhelmed by the amount of laundry there is to be done.
In this message, I help us understand that the Christian walk is more than just going to church and reading the Bible. Actually it is a wild adventure where we get to join God in his amazing mission. In this teaching, I will inspire you “step out of boat” and risk for God. I will take you through the story of Peter walking on water and give you 3 practical tools for experiencing God on a regular basis.
Su, Thanks so much for sharing your message of the intentional home. Your message was spot on and breathtaking! You were supremely confident and comfortable. You were passionate in what you talked about and yet realistic about the life a mom leads. I loved the stats you shared that drove home your points and the photos. The real-life examples you shared were great to help us keep everything in perspective - you weren't preaching perfectionism but intentionality. –Bethany H. MOPS Community Networker: Area 26
